Winter may be on its way, but things are heating up at Purple Porch Co-Op.

The grocery store at 123 N. Hill St. in South Bend is hosting a series of drink events over the next few weeks.

Stop by Purple Porch during Downtown South Bend’s First Fridays event from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, to try a taste of Zen Cafe coffee.

Shaun from Zen Cafe will serve Rudy Carcamo’s direct trade Honduras coffee four different ways. Tasters will be able to note the differences in flavor based on the way the coffee beans are dried, washed and roasted.

Cocktails will be served during the second event in Purple Porch’s drink series. Whiskey on The Porch is from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18. Indiana Whiskey — made right in South Bend — will be served with locally-produced mixers such as Fruit Belt sparkling fruit tonics and Cauldron shrubs. Two non-alcoholic drinks will also be available.

Admission is $5 for Purple Porch member-owners and $8 for non-member-owners, which includes one drink or flight. Additional drinks and flights will be $5 each.

The third and final event will feature craft hot chocolate served during the Downtown South Bend First Friday event from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 2.

Hans Westerink of Violet Sky Chocolate will serve Violet Sky’s craft chocolate. The drink begins with whole cocoa beans. Refined chocolate is added later in the cooking process, and the finished drink is complex with hints of fruit pod. This year’s drink features Guatemalan beans.
