More than a dozen people will show off their rib grilling skills in the BBQ Grill Off at the South Side Family Fun Fest in Elkhart on Sunday, Sept. 4.
The event is set from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Historic Roosevelt Center and Park, 215 E. Indiana Ave.
The festival is free to enter, but festival goers will pay to taste samples from each of the grillers in the barbecue contest. The winner will win a grill donated by Sam’s Club.
Organizers hope to raise $15,000 at the event to pay for a group of 11th and 12th grade students to tour historically black universities in Louisiana and Mississippi.
In addition to the barbecue contest, attendees can enter to win a foosball table, play games and visit with vendors and non-profit organizations.
Magician Kevin Illusionz will perform. Local artists will perform tributes to Cornelius “Speed” Owens, Elkhart’s first black police officer, and the Riders of Elkhart will host a stunt bike show. Motorcyclists and motorcycle clubs are welcome to display their bikes and take part in the stunt show. Donated bicycles will be given to children.
