Humans aren’t the only creatures that enjoy a homemade snack — dogs do too.
In fact, homemade dog treats are becoming a major trend among pet owners who want their four-legged friends to eat as healthy as they do. Some people are even making gluten-free food for their dogs.
Making homemade dog treats doesn’t have to be difficult either. Many recipes have a few ingredients and are simple to cook, but you can definitely go all out and find a more advanced recipe as well. Some are so tasty that you may even enjoy the snacks too.
In honor of National Dog Day on Aug. 26, here are three recipes that your pup is sure to go barking mad over.
FROZEN PEANUT BUTTER YOGURT DISCS (via Cesar’s Way)
Mix together 32 oz. of plain or vanilla yogurt with a cup of melted peanut butter (use a microwave). Pour the mixture into cupcake papers and freeze, then serve. Voila!
HOMEMADE DOGGIE TREATS (via The Kitchn)
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. While it’s warming, mix together 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup wheat germ, 1/2 cup melted bacon fat, 1/2 cup cold water and 1 large egg.
When the dough forms, roll it out until it’s about 1/2 inch thick and cut it into 1-inch x 4-inch bars. Poke divots into the bars, then put them on a cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Then turn the oven off, flip the bars and put them back into the oven until the oven is cool. Yum!
DOG BISCUITS (via Epicurious)
This recipe is by far the most advanced of the three and has 13 ingredients, but your dog is sure to love it. Bonus: the parsley and mint leaves in the recipe will help improve your pup’s breath. Get the complete recipe at Epicurious.
