A sign in the front window of the old Hibachi Grill Buffet on Michigan Street in South Bend has been teasing the arrival of Fiesta Cancun, a Mexican cantina, for some time now, and it appears construction is underway.
The registered agent for the restaurant, Jose Felix Ramirez, said in a telephone interview that he’s working on reformatting the formerly Japanese dining room, but offered few details.
“We are working on Michigan Street,” Ramirez said. “We [started] like six months ago,” he said in March.
Tracy Getz of TB&B Accounting Service in Freeport, Ill., confirmed he did Fiesta Cancun’s for-profit corporation filing on Dec. 2 of last year.
The St. Joseph County and City of South Bend Building Department construction permit affixed inside the western-facing window near the Fiesta Cancun logo indicates Ramirez will be contracting for interior/exterior remodeling and a new patio.
Hibachi Grill Buffet closed during spring of last year in the wake of multiple complaints about cleanliness and food quality. There’s no timeline set for the new Mexican joint’s opening, but construction appears to be in the early stages. A representative of Gustavo Gonzalez Construction, the contractor listed on the construction permit, said the company is working on the restaurant, but did not offer a completion date.
Fiesta Cancun’s menu is also unclear, as Ramirez didn’t say much, but a sign on the front of the restaurant indicates he filed for a liquor license on Jan. 8 (to be performed as a transfer from Bryan’s Piano Barr by the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission).
At the very least, patrons may plan on downing a few margaritas with their Mexican food.
