The rain may have washed away A Night at the Ballpark at the South Bend Cubs’ Four Winds Field, but that didn’t stop baseball lovers from eating a good meal to benefit a good cause.
The Elkhart Truth and Flavor 574 hosted the rained-out event, which was a kick-off to start the Cubs’ season with community fun and concessions food on Wednesday. Instead, the practice was hosted indoors in the Performance Center, and all outdoor activities were canceled.
However, all the money raised from the community event and Flavor 574 banquet will still go to the Boys & Girls Club of Elkhart County.
While blustery and rainy outside, diners enjoyed a meal usually made in warmer days. The meal featured barbecue pulled pork, beef brisket, mac and cheese, corn on the cob, coleslaw, homemade chips and dip, cornbread and banana pudding.
Joe Hart, the president of the Cubs, also gave away tickets to a game, a signed baseball bat and a baseball signed by Tony La Russa. He also announced that the South Bend Cubs would donate an additional $500 to the Elkhart County children’s organization.
