Bell's Brewery begins bottling Oatsmobile Ale for April distribution

Bell’s Brewery is adding it’s first year-round lineup since 2010.

Beginning in April, we will see Oatsmobile Ale (4.3 percent ABV), a hop-forward session pale ale brewed with oats. This will be found across Bell’s distribution footprint, so we will be sure to see this in Michiana on draught and in 12 ounce bottles, packaged in six-packs.

According to the brewery, “Oatsmobile will be dry-hopped with a blend of classic and modern Pacific Northwest hops, including Mosaic, Citra and Amarillo, for a pungent blend of stone fruit and tropical aromas.” Amarillo has been a traditional India Pale Ale (IPA) hop that is often used for its aromatic properties and moderate bittering. Citra, on the other hand, is a newer hop variatal that is used for its strong citrus properties — think Zombie Dust, which is a single citra hop beer. Mosaic hops are known for their earthy and pine characteristics. Put those three hops together at a low ABV, and I think that this is going to be a great summer beer. I’m surprised that Bell’s isn’t going to start canning this and skip bottles.

“This beer is unique. Aromatics may drive it, but the signature ingredient — oats — are what really makes this beer stand apart and also where the name comes from. It’s approachable and intriguing with a fun personality,” said Laura Bell, vice president of Bell’s.

“The use of malted oats help give it a body that you don’t see in most other session pale ales. Once we tweaked the recipe to combine the body from the oats with those powerful hop aromas, we thought it would make a great addition to our year-round portfolio,” she said.

This 100 percent all-malt pale ale was first brewed in 2013 to explore the use of oats in a pale ale at the original brewery in downtown Kalamazoo. Initially it was given the name Oat Ale, and I had the pleasure of enjoying it at least once at the Eccentric Café. It was then renamed Boiling Pot Pale Ale when it was released as a limited specialty draught option in select markets. It will now be making its journey complete to the year-round lineup and I look forward to taking it up north on vacation this coming summer.
