Larry Katz joins Vegetable Buddies as general manager as the popular South Bend nightclub plans to reopen

Vegetable Buddies gained a buddy.

Larry Katz, who recently closed his Yummy Cupcakes shop, said he’s joining Jeff Harrison’s effort to reopen the popular South Bend nightclub.

Katz is a veteran of the local dining scene. He worked at Summit Club for 20 years before working at Ruth’s Chris for several, McCarthy’s on the Riverwalk and Café Navarre.

In June 2014, he opened Yummy Cupcakes at 119 S. Michigan St. in South Bend, trying to ride the cupcake craze. He closed on Dec. 31.

“I could not get enough corporate business,” he said, adding that he also didn’t provide cupcakes to as many weddings as he wanted. He did have some partnerships, including with South Bend Cubs, but not enough sales overall.

Downtown South Bend has a lot of restaurants. “We need some other things downtown here,” he said.

Vegetable Buddies is just down the street from his former shop. Katz believes the new place will add something to downtown. “It’s going to be awesome,” he said.

Katz is general manager of Vegetable Buddies, overseeing the food and beverage operations. He has years of experience doing that. “I’m here now. It’ll be a lot of fun. Nightclub setting. It’s going to be a blast,” he said.

Renovation of the former Trio’s at 131 N. Michigan St. is underway. The floor has been redone, but it could be months until it reopens, depending on licensing.
