Cybil Diehl was read to take the plunge.
Not into nearby Long or Baldwin lakes, but into the world of retail baking.
Diehl opened The Sugar Shack at 69455 Sunset Blvd. in Union, Mich., on the day after Thanksgiving. She’d been baking at home for years, including those when she worked at Elkhart General Hospital, but now has her own shop. “This is the first time ever. It’s going awesome,” she said.
Her children are older and she’s able to focus on her business. “Time for mom to do one of her dreams again,” she said.
Diehl is making a huge range of items — about 50 in all. There are a lot of cookies. And quick breads. And pumpkin roll. But there are also candies, chocolate-covered bacon, chocolate-covered Twinkies, dipped apples and Buckeyes. And there are even dog treats.
Soup and sandwiches are available on a limited basis, though the shop doesn’t have seating. Ice cream, flavored coffees and gifts are also offered.
The Sugar Shack, one of several businesses with that name in Michigan, is located across from Zimmy’s, the popular bar between the two lakes, and is open from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday.
