Elkhart and Elkhart County has its first four-diamond rated restaurant.

Kurt Janowsky’s Artisan earned the coveted award. The restaurant at 505 S. Main St., Elkhart, opened in January and earned the award before completing its first year of business.

“It’s a big deal for us and our team,” Janowsky said.

Few chefs and service staffs earn the award and this a validation, he said.

“It’s exciting and I think it’s exciting for Elkhart to have a four-diamond, award-winning restaurant.”

Elkhart has amenities that measure up to any standard. The Lerner Theatre, Wellfield Botanic Gardens and Midwest Museum of Art measure up and now it has a restaurant that does, too.

“This recognition shows that Elkhart is becoming an even more vibrant and active space downtown. In the quality of place discussion, food is right up there near the top,” Janowsky said in a press release from Gateway Mile.

The award was based on a visit, likely in late summer, Janowsky said. In 2015, only 34 restaurants were added to the list and 44 didn’t keep the designation, according to the release. Only about 700 restaurants in North America earn the award. In Indiana, just five restaurants have it, including Carriage House and LaSalle Grill in South Bend, Joseph Decuis in Roanoke and Restaurant Tallent in Bloomington.

Chef Matthew Jay opened the restaurant with a team in the kitchen and Chef Ryan Wilson is now in charge of the kitchen. Janowsky has repeatedly said the atmosphere is elegant, but not stuffy or pretentious.

“Artisan is fun and comfortable and friendly, with upbeat music in the background and a staff with great energy,” he said.
