Hop Notes: Iechyd Da Brewing Company is brewing batch 300

If it wasn’t for great local support, businesses like Iechyd Da Brewing Company would not be doing as well as they are.

Owners Chip and Summer Lewis recognize this and have named their 300th batch “For the People” (double IPA, 10.3 percent ABV, IBUs 108) in honor of their customers. This is a huge beer that will make hop heads very happy. It is brewed using Mosaic, Citra, Simcoe and Amarillo hops, a huge malt bill and 120 pounds of honey. It is still on tap.

I stopped by last Friday with a bit of a Halloween costume on to get my fix of this celebratory brew. It has a great malt backbone without overpowering the hops that lend their citrus, piney, and floral notes to the flavor. The honey adds just a bit of a dry finish. While I was sitting at the bar, Summer told me Chip has always been more of a dry beer guy over sweet beers.

During Elkhart Dining Days, Iechyd Da has a great pizza on its menu: Voodoo BBQ pizza with either smoked chicken or smoked cauliflower. Marshall King wrote he was looking forward to the cauliflower version because “…the notion of smoking a big ol’ white head of the vegetable intrigues me.”

I’m with Marshall on this and I’m still thinking about which beer I will pair with my Voodoo BBQ pizza.

National Stout Day is Thursday, Nov. 5, though Summer told me with how busy things get during Dining Days, they will hold their Stout Day on Saturday, Nov. 14.  We can look forward to about eight different stouts. Breakfast Cookies (milk stout brewed with cocoa nibs and fresh vanilla beans, 6 percent ABV, IBUs 38) will be on the menu along with several variations including orange zest and toasted coconut with almond. Other offerings will include:

  • Mr. Flash (Russian Imperial Stout) which picked up the People’s Choice award at the Potawatomi Zoo Brew
  • Mr. Flash aged on wood
  • Dead Shot American Stout
  • Dead Shot aged on bourbon soaked oak spirals

And here is one of my favorite ways to enjoy stout: Iechyd Da will be using gelato from The Nut Shoppe in Goshen to make beer floats.

If you don’t already have plans for Black Friday, Iechyd Da will be opening an hour early at 10 a.m. for Summer’s famously delicious biscuits and gravy.
