In the post, ModMex thanked its customers for their support and cited the owners’ desire to retire as the reason for the closure.
Jose Rios and his father Octavio Rios opened the restaurant in November 2011. “One of my dreams was always to open a restaurant with him,” Jose told The Elkhart Truth in February 2012. “We just decided to do it.”
The restaurant’s Mexican-fusion menu was inspired by Octavio’s traditional Mexican fare, California taco trucks and a modern Mexican restaurant called momocho in Cleveland, Jose told the Truth in 2012.

Earlier this summer, ModMex canceled its lunch hours, partly because the owners had little luck hiring new staff. On top of that, the woman who helped manage the restaurant during lunch was offered another job she couldn’t pass up, Jose told Flavor 574 in July.
Moreover, the lunch crowd had been hit or miss despite their efforts, Jose said.
In early August, ModMex put the building up for sale in hopes of moving to a “more central area” at the time, according to previous Flavor 574 reporting.
