A space that was once a longtime nightclub could be something shiny and new by this fall.
Work is underway at the space that used to be Truman’s at 100 N. Center St., Mishawaka. The former dance club was particularly popular among the LGBTQ community before it closed in 2012.
Mary Lou Stevens, co-owner of the neighboring Morgans and Little Black Dog Tavern, said that she and her husband Scott are remodeling the space to make it part of their restaurant.
The tavern has been open since early 2014. As business continues to grow, she and her husband, Scott, are ready to expand.
“We’re getting a little bit more popular, a little bit more well-known,” she said “And we’re having a longer waiting list.”
Remaking the Truman’s space has been in the couple’s plans since the beginning, but they didn’t have enough business to justify it until recently.
Now, they’re cleaning the second floor of the former nightclub and renovating the first. The first floor will be finer dining than the tavern, she said. The event space upstairs could be used for class reunions, parties and other events.
