Taste of the Gardens 2015: Fundraiser for Wellfield Botanic Gardens features 17 local food vendors

What’s better than walking around a beautiful garden on a warm summer afternoon? Bringing local food into the mix.

Wellfield Botanic Gardens will host its annual Taste of the Gardens from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, bringing together local restaurants, live music and artists for a day of family-friendly activities.

Admission tickets are $5 for adults. Children ages 12 and under may enter free of charge. Food prices range from $1 to $7.

Brian Housand, chairman of the event, said that just as each year, the event’s main attraction is the gardens. In fact, there are two new gardens that are still in the works right now, he said.

“The goal is to attract the general public to the gardens so they can experience what is there,” he said. “There aren’t a whole lot of botanic gardens in this area, so we hope to attract quite a number of people.”

Housand said he anticipates the event will bring up to 5,000 people throughout the day, with many visitors coming from out of town.

The event is a fundraiser organized by the Elkhart Rotary Club and proceeds will go toward supporting the garden.

Participating restaurants this year will be:

Live music will start playing at 11:15 a.m., starting with the North American Quintet, an ensemble composed of Goshen College and local musicians. Other bands include Paul Decker and the Real Deal, Lalo Cura and Tumbleweed Jumpers.

Housand said bands will play from an open stage this year which will give a more outdoor concert feel to the event. But there will still be tents for people to take cover if it were to rain.

Local artists will be showing their work, including jewelry, paintings, ceramics, woodwork, glass and photography. Their art will be displayed throughout the garden.
