MIDDLEBURY — Though it isn’t handing out free meals with purchases, 41 Degrees North is working to right an issue with a coupon.
104 S. Main St., Middlebury
Hours: Open from 11 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. Fridays; 1 p.m. to 12 a.m. Saturdays.
The publication, which is circulated around downtown Middlebury, accidentally sent an email to a Gmail account that had a similar name to the restaurant, Slabach said. The person in charge of that email account then pretended to be a 41 Degrees North employee, sent information for and approved a coupon to be published in the magazine’s August issue.
The restaurant wasn’t able to identify where the email account originates from, Slabach said.
The fake coupon would have given customers a free meal with every purchase of a meal, as well as free beer on their birthday.

“Our customers are very important to us, and we know that many of you were excited to use this offer,” read a post on 41 Degrees North’s Facebook page. “As we hope you understand, this offer truly is too good to be true, as it isn’t one which we can accept without significant loss to the business.”
There have been a lot of people who have brought in the fake coupon to 41 Degrees North since it was printed in the publication — at least 10 to 12 people per night, Slabach said. As long as nothing bad happens again, the restaurant will not continue looking for the person who pretended to be them.
In response to the fake coupon, 41 Degrees North will give customers a separate offer at their restaurant.
Customers who present the fake coupon will get half off of an entree after the purchase of the first entree. The second entree must be of equal or lesser value, and the offer is only valid once per group. Customers can take advantage of this offer until Aug. 31.
