There’s one less lunch option in east Elkhart as ModMex Restaurant begins only serving dinner.
The Mexican restaurant announced on its Facebook page earlier this month that it will no longer serve lunch. Dinner hours will stay the same, 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday to Saturday.
Co-owner Jose Rios said ModMex cut back its hours partly because he has had little luck in hiring new staff. On top of that, Rios’ sister, who helped manage the restaurant during lunch, was offered another job “that she couldn’t pass.”

“It was hard enough managing it,” Rios said. “She did a good job finding good help, but it was pretty hard looking for (employees). You know, we put up signs (which read) ’We’re hiring,’ but it seems like we couldn’t ever find (anyone)…since she was pretty much managing (the restaurant) and running the kitchen, I didn’t have any other option.”
The lunch crowd had also been “hit or miss” despite their efforts, Rios said.
The change in hours might mean that ModMex Restaurant could add more items to the dinner menu, though Rios said that would be a while away.
Mod-Mex Restaurant is located at 1700 Toledo Road in Elkhart.
