Best of the Bend Wine and Brew Fest offered a sampling of Michiana made craft beverages

The sun was shining and rain was falling as I pulled into the parking lot of the Century Center in South Bend.

I was there to sample some brews for the Best of the Bend Wine and Brew Fest. Because of the heat, and the potential for stormy weather, the event was moved indoors, a wise move as far as this beer drinker was concerned.

I stopped by the booths for Crooked Ewe, South Bend Brew Werks and Evil Czech Brewery and sampled some of their available suds.

EnviroFest Lemony Wheat

This is a wonderfully summery beer, which I discovered was brewed especially for Elkhart’s EnviroFest. The golden color caught my eye first, but the citrus aroma is what reeled me in. I was pleased to find that the citrus in the aroma flowed into the flavor of the beer with a light crispness.

American Amber

This beer was everything I was looking for in an amber. The aroma was fruit-forward and enticed me to take my first sip. I wasn’t disappointed. I was surprised by a creamy and slightly hoppy flavor which finished smooth, leaving me wishing I had a bigger tasting glass.

Voodoo Vanilla Rye Porter

The smoked vanilla aroma of this porter told me everything I needed to know about this beer. My tongue was initially wrapped by velvety smoked vanilla, which transitioned into a crisp light finish. The delicious smokiness lingered in my mouth and dared me to take another drink.
