SOUTH BEND — Once the smell of funnel cakes fills the air for the summer, it’s not going anywhere.
Fair season kicks off with the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair from Friday, July 3 to Saturday, July 11.
This year’s fair boasts 44 food vendors and will include classic fair offerings, among a few newcomers, Larry Ort, a St. Joseph County 4-H Fair board member, told Flavor 574.

Fairgoers can expect fried vegetables, funnel cakes, elephant ears and other beloved fair foods. Some other vendors this year include shrimp, fried sundaes, ribeye steaks and sandwiches and Fire N the Hole, pizza cooked over a fire on site, Ort said.
Also new this year is a pop-up Panda Express restaurant, Ort said.

There are open classes this year, including cake decorating, canned food preservation, and other food classes, according to the fair website.
There will be a strawberry bake-off contest at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11, in the Hoosier Tire Commercial Building, according to the fair schedule.
It’s a safe bet to bring cash to the fair in case vendors don’t accept credit or debit, though Ort said there are four ATM machines on the fairgrounds.
