Each year, Zymurgy Magazine asks readers to list their top 20 favorite commercial beers available in the United States. The magazine tallies the votes and the rest is history.

For the last several years (I think six or seven, I’ve lost track at this point), the top two spots have gone to the same two beers: the number-one Russian River Pliny the Elder of Santa Rosa, Calif., and number-two Bell’s Two Hearted Ale Kalamazoo, Mich.

That is something to be pretty proud of, but I don’t need any poll to tell me Two Hearted is a great beer. Anyone who has had it fresh on tap at Bell’s Eccentric Cafe (or from the bottle or at any bar in Michiana) can also attest to that.

Three Floyds from Munster, Ind., Founders from Grand Rapids, Mich., Great Lakes Brewing and Fat Heads, both from Ohio, and Goose Island from Chicago, Ill., were also represented on these lists. Many of the beers are available in Michiana on draft or in bottle shops.

Here is the total list, with area breweries listed in red, from the American Homebrewers website, with “T” standing for a tie:
