A Goshen couple is still in the beginning stages of their plans to open a cocktail bar in the downtown area.

In the meantime, they’re asking for the community’s help.

Jami and Ryan Hawkins announced in February that they plan to open Common Spirits, an addition to downtown bar scene.

Over the last four weeks, they have been accepting donations through an Indiegogo campaign. The goal is to raise $15,000 by May 8.

Part of the money raised would be used for a deposit to secure the bar’s location, which the Hawkinses haven’t disclosed just yet.

The sooner they secure the location, the sooner they get to open, Jami said. The goal is to open by late fall this year.

So far, the campaign has only raised 39 percent of its goal, with 66 hours to go. The couple will only keep the money if the campaign reaches its goal by the deadline.

“It’s an all or nothing kind of deal,” she said.

Still, Jami remains optimistic. The campaign is already helping the couple connect with people who may not have heard about Common Spirits yet.

“The outpour of support from everyone on the IndieGoGo campaign has been awesome,” she said. “We’ve had a chance to expand our reach of people with that and our Facebook page, so that’s been great.”

Jami said she’s still in the process of writing the business plan. But she’s already decided on having sushi once a week, brunch and group cocktails.

She’s glad to have heard all the positive feedback in the past month, she said.

“Everyone is super excited,” she said. “Even from other local businesses downtown, the feedback has been really great. It’s like ‘the more the merrier’ kind of mentality.”
