The benches are out, the ice cream machine hums and two families mix and create flavors as they prepare for another summer in Goshen.
The Chief, 502 W. Lincoln Ave., will open its doors for the season Monday, April 20, for a 53rd year in business.
Vanessa Steffan, co-owner of The Chief, said the staff is in place and will be ready to scoop ice cream at 4 p.m. for their first day of the season.

The Steffans and Vanderveers have been working over the last week making ice cream ahead of time. Once they open, they’ll be making about 70 gallons of ice cream every day.
Steffan said she hopes to have new flavors this season. The first flavor of the week this year will be Georgia peach, as it has been in past years.
It’s a job that was challenging when Steffan and two other co-owners worked in the local schools as teachers and administrators.
Now retired, Steffan said the job has become easier, and it’s one she enjoys doing.
“I like working with the kids and just watching all the happy faces once they leave,” she said.
