Junior Achievement of Elkhart County will partner once again with Lemonade Day, an annual, free experiential program fostering business values among the area’s budding leaders.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2, the national Lemonade Day program will promote profit-making and problem solving skills by giving kids the chance to operate lemonade stands. Children in grades K-12 can participate and must be registered by May 1.

“We’re really teaching kids the skills of entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work readiness,” said Manessah Nelson, director of Junior Achievement of Elkhart County. “Lemonade Day is the application of those skills.”

Registered participants will receive backpacks and workbooks featuring tips on budgeting finances, serving customers, repaying investors and community contribution. Students keep all profits from their projects, although the program model encourages them to “spend a little, save a little, share a little.”

Last year’s event included 289 registered citrus stands. Nelson said Junior Achievement is hoping for 600 this time around. More than 250 volunteers and 80 local organizations have partnered with the Elkhart County chapter of Junior Achievement to host this year’s experience.

A free workshop for students will take place from 9 a.m. to noon April 18 at Concord Mall, 3701 S. Main St., Elkhart. The open house-style class will focus on financial responsibility and offer tips for constructing a stand.

Prior to Lemonade Day, Junior Achievement will host a breakfast and volunteer celebration from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at The Lerner Theatre’s Crystal Ballroom
