The week before Valentine’s Day always seems to be a dash — for couples, for florists and for restaurants. Before we head into the week, figure out your plans for Feb. 14 and check out a few other food stories to keep on your radar.
VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER DATE NIGHT
Early reservation slots are going fast, but there is still time to find a table for a romantic dinner for two Saturday, Feb. 14. Flavor 574’s Michelle Sokol has a few ideas: painting with wine followed by dinner at new downtown Elkhart restaurant Artisan, or a sushi dinner for two at Woochi in downtown South Bend.
A few slots remain at Artisan later in the evening. Call the restaurant at 574-355-3355 to make a reservation. To get in on Woochi’s “Miso Crazy About You” multi-course meal, call the restaurant at 574-289-2222.
In our second edition of Ask a Foodie, Emily Navarro asked about the protein content in smoothies versus solid foods. As it turns out, protein is protein regardless if it is liquid or solid. Memorial Hospital’s clinical nutrition manager Gail Weismann R.D. said the body digests both the same way.

Proteins are broken down once they enter the stomach, but the nutrients in the protein depend on whether it is animal- or plant-based.

Pillars of Elkhart is hosting its sixth Trudge for Suds from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, in downtown Elkhart. This year’s trudge kicks off at Krāv, and participants will meander to bars and restaurants for food and fun. For more information, see the story on Flavor 574.
