Free Chipotle, South Bend Winter Restaurant Week and more to chew on
The food scene for 2015 is already off to a strong start, and the last week of January also touts delicious deals and tasty throwbacks. As you head into the last stretch of the month, keep these three stories on the front burner.
The smell of chicken and mojos lingered in the air Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Elkhart Knights of Columbus hall for its annual Shakey’s fundraiser. The restaurant used to be a staple in the Elkhart and Dunlap areas, especially as a hangout spot for sodas and pizza after high school sports games on Friday nights, according to event organizer Steve Riikonen.
Only 1,000 seats were available and attendees reminisced over about 3,000 pieces of chicken and roughly 1,500 potatoes. Money from the event is used for the Knights of Columbus’ charitable events throughout the year.
Expanding your culinary horizons can earn you some free food. Customers who purchase Sofritas — a pepper-braised tofu dish at Chipotle — on Monday, Jan. 26 can hang onto the receipt and redeem it for a free burrito, bowl or salad at the restaurant the following month.
Flavor 574’s Geoff Lesar already sampled the Sofritas and said you don’t have to be a vegan or even a vegetarian to give it a try.

From reporter @GeoffLesar: “Sofritas…tastes like chicken. As an omnivore, I would eat this again.”

There are two Chipotle restaurants in Michiana: 1250 N. Eddy St., in Eddy Street Commons in South Bend, and 5445 N. Main St. in Mishawaka. Both are open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday.
More than a dozen restaurants are serving up special deals starting Monday, Jan. 26 through Feb. 8 for South Bend Winter Restaurant Week. Participating restaurants will offer special menus for $11, $22 or $33.
About 10 percent of the proceeds from each meal will benefit Memorial Children’s Hospital of South Bend. Make a plan (and room in your stomach) and see participating restaurants and specials being offered at each.
