After months of preparation, Artisan is opening in downtown Elkhart.
“We’re ready,” said owner Kurt Janowsky on Friday morning, Jan. 9.
Before Christmas, he said the opening would be delayed to this week because of the holiday catering season. As promised, the restaurant will open at 5 p.m. tonight, with the bar opening at 4:30 p.m.
Chef Matthew Jay is overseeing the food preparation, including tasting menus. “The food will be spot on,” Janowsky said.
He brought some staff members to the new restaurant at 505 S. Main St., Elkhart, from his Cafe Navarre in downtown South Bend and has hired a few others.
Janowsky said it’ll take a little time for the service at Artisan to be completely polished, but not too long.
On a cold, wintry January day, will anyone come to the restaurant’s debut?
Janowsky said seven or eight tables are reserved for the first night and others on Saturday. He has loyal customers from Cafe Navarre, Rocky River, The Exchange and Matterhorn catering, and some of his regulars have been in touch about becoming some of the first to dine at Artisan.
The menu includes a range of salads, soups, seafood and other entrees. It also has two tasting menus. A six-course menu is $50 per person and $40 more for a wine pairing. A nine-course tasting menu is $85 and the wine pairing is $75. View a PDF of the menu here.
