Thousands of pounds of raw turkey meat and empty metal cans, hundreds of volunteers and lots of steam and heat are soon to get together in Goshen, all in the name of feeding hungry people around the world.
The Mennonite Central Committee mobile meat canner is scheduled to be at The Depot, 1013 Division St. in Goshen, from Jan 8-10 and Jan 12-17.
According to Jessica Steiner, MCC Great Lakes Communications Coordinator, the goal this year is to can 78,000 pounds of turkey meat, up from last year’s 68,000 pounds.
MCC ships the cans from the mobile meat canner to aid organizations in Africa, South America and Asia. Ten percent of the meat canned in Goshen will be donated to local food banks to be distributed locally.
Although volunteers for the annual event come mostly from local Amish and Mennonite churches, anyone is welcome.
