Many of us will agree that beer is delicious — however, it doesn’t have to be just for drinking. Jenny Frech at The Soapy Gnome in Goshen makes soap using beer. According to Frech, “Beer makes a good soap great!”
The hops in the beer are relaxing and can soothe skin, and the sugars in the beer help create a creamy and bubbly lather. While Frech’s beer soaps are scented, she plays with the aromas of the beer to create a unique bathing experience.
The Chocolate Banana soap uses Goshen Brewing Co. dunkelweiss, featuring notes of banana, chocolate and clove from the beer. In addition to the beer, the soap is made with mashed bananas.
Pumpkin Ale soap is made with Goshen Brewing Co. Rye IPA. It has pumpkin purée, and is scented with orange and ginger.
South Bend Brew Werks brews Cascading White Water (wheat beer, 5.3% ABV, IBUs 20), which is added to the Grapefruit Lavender soap. Frech scents this soap with lavender and grapefruit, which compliment the zesty grapefruit and orange rind notes from the beer.
One of my favorite beers, Bell’s Two Hearted (7% ABV), is used to make the Beer and Spice soap. Frech told me that hoppy beers make some of the best soap. If you use a great hoppy beer like Two Hearted, then you get a really great soap.
This one is scented with cinnamon and anise, making it smell a little like Christmas, and since I have a bar of this currently in my shower, I can fully endorse it as a great soap. If I could post a scratch and sniff photo, I surely would.
Since I can’t, check out The Soapy Gnome for yourself, where you will find natural body care products including soap, body butters, shaving supplies and lip balms. The shop also features functional items from local artists such as pottery soap dishes.
