Goshen is getting a little less sweeter.

Restaurants or bakeries close for a variety of reasons, but in northern Indiana it’s not usually because someone’s moving across the country.

Margaret Potuck, owner of Happy Dance Cupcakes, is moving with her husband to California where he’s taken a job. That means no more cupcakes coming out of her licensed kitchen at her home south of downtown Goshen.

Happy Dance started several years ago after the Potucks moved to Goshen. She wanted to open a business and settled on cupcakes, which had become a food fad elsewhere and were taking hold here.

In 2012, the Dining A La King Cupcake Quest searched for the best cupcakes in Elkhart County. Readers selected Mini Delights Bake Shoppe, but as the critic, I picked Happy Dance.

It was true then, and still is, that I’ve never had a dry Happy Dance cupcake. The buttercream on top of the crumb and the fillings inside are also well-made.

Potuck sold her cupcakes to Constant Spring and at the Goshen Farmers Market, as well as directly to customers. She built a nice business.

At the market Saturday, her last day there, she said she’ll miss her friends in Goshen, but was clear that she won’t miss winter.

She said she may continue baking in Carlsbad, Calif., at a coffee shop there.

Best of luck, Margaret and Michael. Thanks for the good flavors you gave us in northern Indiana.
