The menu at The Bacon Strip is about to get pretty interesting for a few weeks.

The first round of voting for the restaurant’s bacon recipe contest began today, with a special menu featuring four bacon dishes submitted by Flavor 574 readers. Over the next two weeks, diners can vote for their favorites by ordering them — the most popular dish moves on to the championship round Oct. 15.

More details on the contest here.

We decided it’s a good time to get to know the four bacon dishes going head to head (or plate to plate) in Round 1. So here they are, in no particular order — we wouldn’t want to play favorites.

Bac’d In Waffle
This one keeps it simple: a crispy golden waffle with bacon and cheese baked in. Submitted by Kim Whittaker.

Canadian Bacon and Fries Omelet
Cube Canadian bacon and toss with chopped parsley, chopped French fries and a few drops of apple cider vinegar. Throw it on the skillet until the bacon is caramelized. Meanwhile, prepare omelet until almost done. Add filling, fold and serve. Submitted by Laura Coyne.

Coyne said this recipe is a variation on a menu item from Camelia Grill in New Orleans. The addition of the vinegar gives it a northern touch.

Gut Buster Burger
Take a standard hamburger and stack it with an over-easy egg and a few strips of bacon, then spread the bun with peanut butter and let the gooey goodness commence. Served with chips or fries. Submitted by Andora Bahr.

Hillbilly Bacon Dog
Split a hot dog down the middle, stuff with grated cheese and bacon, then top with chili, coleslaw and more cheese. Served with chips or fries. Submitted by Jaimie Dayton.

The recipe that emerges victorious will not only earn itself a spot on The Bacon Strip’s regular menu, but also win its submitter a $100 Visa gift card and one free meal per week for a year at The Bacon Strip.

Voting in Round 1 is open now, and continues through Sept. 28. If you can’t stuff yourself with enough bacon-centric meals to vote as much as you want to, there are other ways to cast your ballot — just ask your server.
