Celebrate Elkhart brings a week of festivities downtown

Festivities kick off this weekend in downtown Elkhart as The Elkhart Truth celebrates 125 years of serving the Elkhart community, featuring plenty of good local food and drink all week long.

Celebrate Elkhart begins Saturday, Aug. 2. with a dog-friendly happy hour on the Civic Plaza and culminates in a blowout block party Saturday, Aug. 9.

Aug. 2, 5-10 p.m.
The Dog Daze of Summer, presented by the Pillars of Elkhart, will feature a beer garden and food vendors, including Hotdogeddy’s, Ron’s River Dogs, Inc. and Mini Delights Bake Shoppe.

The event will take place at Civic Plaza, 300 S. Main St. Entry cost is $5 and proceeds support the Humane Society of Elkhart County.

Aug. 3, 2 p.m.
Sunday afternoon, Aug. 3, Wellfield Botanic Gardens will host a screening of the film “Shrek” with snow cone vendor Kona Ice on-site. Cost to attend is $5 for non-members, free for members and there’s a suggested $1 donation for children.

Aug. 5 & 6, 6 p.m.
Next up is The Elkhart Truth’s tap party, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5., at Iechyd Da, 317 N. Main St. The brewing company will be tapping a brand new beer, “Truth Serum,” brewed in honor of The Elkhart Truth’s 125th anniversary.

Local libations keep flowing Wednesday with the Flavor 574 Tap Party at New Paradigm on 600 S. Main Street. The party will feature a tap take-over from Burn ’Em Brewing out of Michigan City. Take the opportunity to meet folks from the brewery and taste some MCA IPA, Joey Wheat, Brindle, Hop Parade or a specialty batch of 42 Amber Rye.

Aug. 7, 6-9 p.m.
The kids get a chance to join the fun from Thursday, Aug. 7. Cubby Bear Pizza at 526 S. Main Street will be showing cartoons on the big screen, offering and family specials on pizza and serving frozen yogurt from the new Cubby Cone.

For the grown-ups, 523 Tap & Grill at 523 S. Main St. will also be featuring a special wine and cheese menu Thursday evening, after the 7:30 p.m. performance by Paul Revere & The Raiders show at The Lerner Theatre.

Aug. 9, 10 a.m.-10:30 p.m.

All of the week’s festivities lead up to to the main event: an all-day, all-ages Celebrate Elkhart block party on Main Street in Elkhart on Saturday, Aug. 9.

The party kicks off at 10 a.m. with food vendors, street entertainment, outdoor live music and family-friendly activities throughout the day.

The all-ages beer garden opens at 1 p.m., serving beer, soda and water from Bowly’s Crystal Bar and Iechyd Da. Also on tap will be $4 pints of Iechyd Da’s Truth Serum, a nut brown ale brewed in honor of the Elkhart Truth’s anniversary.

New Paradigm, 523 Tap & Grill and Cubby Bear Pizza will all be serving carry-out specials Saturday, inviting attendees to eat outside in the beer garden.

Cubby Bear Pizza will serve four-piece chicken meal with Frankie Fries for $5.99 and 12-inch cheese or pepperoni pizzas for $10. 

523 Tap & Grill will serve marinated steak kebabs with pita ($9), blue cheese guacamole stuffed portobello mushroom ($4), spiced beef sliders ($7) and bacon candy with coffee ice cream ($5).

Plus, The Weiner Shack’s new food truck will make an evening appearance serving gourmet dogs.

There is a $5 cover charge for the beer garden starting at 6 p.m. Live music from Zach DuBois, the Elkhart native country singer-songwriter, starts at 7 p.m. and the Goshen based folk-rock band The Tumbleweed Jumpers takes the stage at 9 p.m.
