The annual Volcano sausage sandwich returns
A beloved Elkhart sandwich is back – for two days only.
If numbers speak for themselves, many people are already familiar with Volcano Pizza’s annual tradition of Sausage Days, when the Elkhart restaurant sells an incredibly popular sausage sandwich for less than 48 hours to estimates of more than a thousand people per day.
This year’s Sausage Days will be held on July 16 and 17 under a big white tent in the parking lot of the Volcano Pizza at 126 Easy Shopping Place in Elkhart. The sandwiches go on sale at 10 a.m. and will be sold until they sell out out – usually around 3 p.m., said Justin Eymer, manager of that location.
So what exactly are so many people waiting for? The bestseller is a charcoal-grilled Italian sausage patty with green peppers and onions on a hamburger-style bun. This year, each sandwich will be $5.85 with tax, up from last year’s $5.14 without tax.
“It’s the same sausage we sell in the restaurant, but you can only get this sandwich two days a year,” Eymer said.
The tradition is an old one. Volcano’s was established in 1957; owner Fritz Campanello, the founder’s son, began Sausage Days around 1978, reported The Elkhart Truth. The restaurant has two other locations in Elkhart, but 126 Easy Shopping Place is the original.
Last July, thousands of customers stood in hot weather for the sandwiches, which were cooked on four grills by employees and members of Campanello’s family, according to the Truth. Eymer expects the same turnout for Sausage Days 2014.
“Come early because you’ll be waiting in line,” said Eymer, who has managed the location for 24 years. “It’s not uncommon for people to wait at least half an hour.”
Volcano Pizza is located at 126 Easy Shopping Place, 1900 G Berry Street and 3704 E. Mishawaka Road in Elkhart.
