The Best Thing I Ate This Week: Burgers and Mexican food

By: J.C. Lee

If you’ve ever wondered where to get one of the best burgers in northern Indiana, look no further than Elkhart County.

The Elkhart Truth managing editor and food writer Marshall King visited Flippin’ Cow Burger Joint in Elkhart County to get a taste of the Stella Moo burger, which reminded him of one of his earliest memories of food. Don’t just take it from King though. The Stella Moo is one of the top four burgers in the Northern Indiana Burger Wars.

Reporter Sharon Hernandez also shared stories of some of her favorite foods growing up in Puebla, Mexico, and one of the recipes dates as far back as the 1600s.

Hernandez is fond of mole poblano, a spicy sauce made from chiles, spices and chocolate. The History Channel writes that the recipe has its origins in the 17th century. She also delights in chiles en nogada, which are peppers stuffed with seasonal fruits and dressed in pomegranate seeds.

Hernandez also offered some of her suggestions for the best places to get Mexican food in Elkhart County, including burritos at Rickys Taqueria and tortas at the Cueramaro Supermarket. You can find the locations of these restaurants and supermarkets in the map below.

What’s the best thing you ate this week? Where do you think the best burgers and Mexican dishes are in Elkhart County?
