Did you know today is National Doughnut Day?
National chains and local bakeries alike are giving away free doughnuts today as a way to celebrate the holiday. But there’s some history to this celebration.
The Salvation Army observes the day to commemorate the volunteers who introduced the pastries to U.S. soldiers during World War I, according to the Salvation Army USA blog.

Here is a list of places where you can find free doughnuts, although some places may require a purchase of some sort to get a free pastry:
•Dunkin’ Donuts will give away a free donut to each customer with the purchase of any beverage while supplies last. You can find a Dunkin’ Donuts near you in Goshen and South Bend.
•Krispy Kreme is handing out donuts all day. All you have to do is show up and ask for a free doughnut. Krispy Kreme has locations in Mishawaka and Grand Rapids.
•Rise ’N Roll Bakery is giving away free doughnuts today to any customers who stop by its Middlebury location between 4 and 9 a.m. The deal does not apply at the Nappanee location.
•Tim Hortons, a Canadian chain with numerous locations in the U.S., is also giving out free doughnuts all day with any purchase made. Customers must say, “Happy National Doughnut Day” to get their free treat. You can find a Tim Hortons in Kalamazoo,
