Hungry? Here's where you can find something healthy for lunch

Memorial Day weekend means plenty of hamburgers, potato salad and pie. With all of that junk food, it might be time to eat something healthy, or at least fresh and light, for lunch today. Luckily, there are several places in Michiana that specialize in fresh and light.

Purple Porch Co-op

Location: 123 N. Hill St., South Bend

Hours: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday

What do they have? Purple Porch is a co-op that offers a grocery store where you can buy fresh, local items and a cafe that serves healthy food. Menu items vary by day, so check out its Facebook page for updates.

What are people saying about them?

“I absolutely love the convenience of the location. I am so happy that you are there and offer all of the items that I use. The best part are all the amazing lunch specials!!!” – Camelia Gonzalez, Facebook

“I had the best chorizo breakfast burrito ever, and the staff is friendly and helpful!” – Cindee Goodling, Facebook

“My favorite part of Purple Porch is Cafe Max! I love the daily soup selections and that there is always a vegan option. There is a lovely little salad bar with organic veggies and dressings. There are lots of cookies, baked goods and even to go meals. Always free ice water and iced tea and lemonade for only $0.75 a glass!” – Aditi G., Yelp

Uptown Kitchen

Hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily

What do they have? Breakfast, brunch and lunch options that often feature organic, gluten-free and vegetarian items. The restaurant serves alcohol but is also kid-friendly.

What are people saying about them?

“We came in for Easter brunch and had a great time. The bloody mary’s were excellent (and only $5!) and we had the bagel with lox and the eggs benedict with steak. The service was fantastic and we couldn’t have asked for anything better. We were pleasantly surprised because it seems much more similar to a place you’d find in the city than in the suburbs.” – Kate W., Yelp

“Ate here with my wife and we both enjoyed our meals. I had the veggie burger, it was a hearty size and very good. Instant favorite. My wife had the Bari’s chopped salad and it was huge. She loved it. Atmosphere was great and relaxing. This place is definitely worth a try for anyone new.” – Jeremy B., Yelp

“Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants. Very clean, urban, trendy, healthy, delicious food. I cannot recommend Uptown enough. The specials are ALWAYS great. Very friendly, prompt, accomodating wait staff. I love going here for brunch. It can be a bit crouded, but always worth the wait.

The Owner has a tendency of personally coming by your table and thanking you for coming in. He does a great job with this place and also the mark.” – Jason R., Yelp

The Moringa Tree

Location: 300 E. Jackson Blvd., Elkhart

Hours: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday

What do they have? Lunch and dinner options featuring local, organic, gluten-free items that can be easily made vegetarian or vegan. Everything is homemade fresh, including the smoothies and daily specials.

What are people saying about them?

“I love this place. It’s adorable and cozy, always smells delicious. The food is wonderful, though of limited selection. I don’t mind, and come here frequently for a smoothie or fresh juice. The little protein ball snacks she makes are AMAZING as well. Jenny, the owner, is super friendly and knowledgeable. I feel good spending my money here, because I like the people and the food is so healthy that I don’t feel guilty going out to eat here.” – Ellyn C., Yelp

“I just had lunch here and it was great. My family and I got the bruschetta and guac as an appetizer. All delicious. I have the Asian salad for lunch and the flavors were great. My mom’s chicken special was also really well seasoned. Jenny really knows her stuff.

It was all really nice and refreshing compared to a lot of the other dining options around here. And I thought it would be years before Elkhart would come around and get a place that served fresh smoothies and juice and meals made with fresh produce.” – Katie B., Yelp

“A gem in a surprisingly odd location, northern Indiana. Great to see new influences in the midwest to introduce healthier choices amongst a sea of never ending cheese, fat, and carb filled other restaurants.

The food and juices are great and I will make sure to visit here each time I am in town. High marks all around to front and back of house.” – Vincent S., Yelp
